Special Silicon Dioxide for Fire-Rated Glass

Special silicon dioxide is a functional material customized for manufacturing heat-insulating fire-rated glass. Different from common silica used in rubber, coatings and feed additives, it serves as the core raw material for A-class grouted fire-resistant glass.
This material supports two key performances of fire-rated glass: high light transmittance for daily decoration and high-temperature fire resistance & thermal blocking. It is widely applied in building curtain walls, fire partitions, fire doors & windows, rail transit, data centers and other scenarios, complying with mainstream fire certification standards of China and Europe.

Three main types of special silicon dioxide are available for fire-rated glass production.
  1. Substrate silica: Used for melting fire glass base sheets to boost high-temperature resistance and thermal shock resistance.
  2. Interlayer nano silica / silica sol: The dominant functional material for inorganic fire-resistant gel in grouted fire glass.
  3. Modified fumed silica: Added to adjust rheology, prevent settlement and improve weather resistance of fire gel.

Fire & Heat Insulation Mechanism

Amorphous high-purity silicon dioxide has a melting point up to 1700°C. It goes through physical and chemical phase changes step by step during a fire.
  • At room temperature: Nano silica disperses evenly inside gel to form a highly transparent system without distortion or yellowing.
  • 100–200°C: Bound water and crystal water evaporate and absorb massive heat to slow temperature rise on the unexposed side.
  • 300–600°C: Nano silica dehydrates and condenses to form porous ceramic skeleton with low thermal conductivity for effective heat insulation.
  • Above 600°C: Silica sinters into a dense refractory layer. It bonds broken glass fragments tightly to maintain barrier integrity and block flame & smoke penetration.

Product Advantages

✅ Satisfy both fire integrity and thermal insulation requirements✅ High transparency, long-term weather resistance, no alkali blooming✅ No flying glass fragments under high temperature✅ Customizable for different fire ratings, curved and shaped glass

Market Trend

Updated fire safety codes push manufacturers to phase out low-grade sodium silicate systems and adopt nano silica-based fire glass. Demand for 2h and 3h high-performance fire-rated glass keeps growing. High-purity recycled silica from optical fiber preform by-products emerges as a competitive alternative to traditional mineral silica, featuring high purity, clarity and cost benefits.
